My Kidney Stone Symptoms

I woke up this morning 9/21/07, and my left lower back was in terrible pain, and a few minutes later so was my left abdominal. As a matter of fact it was the greatest pain i had ever experienced in my life. So i went to the emergency room, and again it was a kidney stone, 4mm. A little stone can cause so much pain, this is my 6 th kidney stone, but for some reason, by far the symptoms were the most painful.

Ok, well to sum it up, i got on iv, they gave me some inflammatory medicine and within 10 mins of doing so the pain subsided. I was there 5 hrs, because they needed blood, urine and cat scan. I am feeling fine now though.

So here are some common kidney stone symptoms:
- severe lower back pain
- severe abdomen pain
- blood in urine
- difficulty urinating
- nausea
- vomiting
- a burning sensation while urinating
- fever
- chills

If you have kidney stones, or will be passing kidney stones, there is a book you should check out. Kidney Stone Breakthrough!

My Kidney Stone Story
by Joseph Noonan

I like to start things of telling you a little about me. I currently live in New York, and just
graduated from High School. I just recently turned 20, yes, you can get stones that young. It's
not likely, but it is possible. The weird part is, i heard of kidney stones, and i prayed i would
never accumulate any, cause to be honest the idea scared me to death. I hoped i would never get any,
cause i hear its like giving birth for a male(pain wise).

So one day I'm laying on my bed in my room, and I have a sharp pain in my lower back. I became
a little worried when it wasnt going away. So i did the one thing that always calms me down, and thats
take a bath. Still, the pain does not reside, and I'm up all night trying to figure out what it is.
I take some medicine(tylenol) and in a couple hours the pain in my back alleviates, but i have a shooting pain, in my abdomen area, right above my groin. Its not that strong of pain, so manage to get some sleep.

The next day both pains are back, and the abdomen pain is worse. Now, i hate going to hospitals. See, I have this theory that every time someone goes to the hospital they get bloodwork. I personally faint when i get bloodwork, so i avoid going as much as possible. As the pain gets worse i get more and more scared.

Ok, I finally muster up the courage to visit the emergency room. Now, if you experience any of these kidney stone symptoms I seriously recommend going to the emergency room as soon as possible. Kidney stones can somewhat be so much pain, that a person can't stand that pain, and faints. It's not rare that they vomit also. Although, i did not experience these specific symptoms, it is possible you have or will. I did not go to the hospital immediately because hospitals are one of my greatest fears, and my symptoms were not that intense. Well I eventually get a Ultrasound(totally pain-free) actually lie a x-ray, and they determine i have a 3mm kidney stone in my left ureter. The doctor told me 3mm is significantly small and i shouldnt have a problem passing it. He prescribes me a strong medication for pain, and antibiotics for prevention of infection, and to drink a large amount of water (8 cups a day). Well later that night i take the medication, and boy is it strong, makes most of my body numb. So i decide to just stick to advil or tylenol, doc says it ok for minor pain. So as 2 weeks pass of constantly feeling of having to always urinate, one night it happens. I have a small pain in my private area(2-10)on a scale, so i go upstairs and urinate into my screen provided by the doc. Booom there is the kidney stone. It pops out with no pain, (I did take motrin that day but by the time i passed it, the medicine had wore off) and it looks like a yellow little stone the size of a very small pebble. Believe me, when you pass a stone you will see it. My private area was a little sore after passing the kidney stone (1-10) on a scale, but thats to be expected. So basically my stone was too small to cause any significant pain. If you have a kidney stone 2-3-4 or maybe even 5mm it is not liking giving birth for a male like people say it is. I felt a great sense of accomplishment when i passed it. I was so happy, and i thanked GOD. Actually I had more pain with the symptoms then the actual moment of passing.

A couple days later I brought it in to the doc. to get it analyzed, and I'm still awaiting the results.
See, most kidney stones are made up of Calcium Oxilate. Which is found in soda, chocolate, some leafy
vegetables, ect. It totally made sense, i was a chocolate/soda junkie for many years. He told to lay
off those things and continue to drink lots of water to flush the system. Water truly is the healthiest
for the body at times like these. He told me to get a lot of exercise. Also, if i was taking any calcium supplements, to stop. Kidney stones can easily reoccur in patients, but if hydration of body, with daily exercise, greatly improve your chances of not obtaining then anymore.

More Bad News.....

The doctor also tells me I have bilateral stones, and in my case multiple ones. Bilateral means on both sides. It startled me, but he told me they were all small, and he could not determine when they will pass. He said the I could pass them in a couple weeks or in a couple years. Well its been a month since i passed the first one , and since then i have passed 2 more. One was 2mm, and the other was 1mm. I may have more on the way, but i have stopped drinking soda, and cut down on chocolate.

I thank god everyday for what i have overcome, and pray he will be there for me also if i have more to pass in the future. I just want to help other people with this problem, because folks, Kidney Stones are NO joke!!! Some kidney stones require to be surgically removed. Though, they have developed a machine for destroying kidney stones without incision. So stay hydrated, stay away from too much soda, and exercise. It's good for kidney stone size reduction,
and prevention!
