Cerbral Palsy
senseCerbral Palsy?
Cerbral Palsy is one of many nuerological disorders in a infant, and early childhood. The condition effects the bodies movement and muscle coordination permanently through out one's life, but does not usually worsen. Problems with muscles and nerves are due to abnormalities in the part of the brain that controls muscle movement. Most of the children with cerbral palsy are born with it, but sometimes the disorder cannot be detected for months, even years, and usually appears before the child reaches 3 yrs of age. Some symptoms include lack of muscle coordination, stiff or tight muscles, exaggerated reflexes(walking with 1 foot or leg dragging, walking on toes, crouched or scissored gate, and too floopy, or too tight muscle tone.) A small portion of people of children aquire cerbral palsy through brain damage in the first year of life, brain infections, or severe head injury, form car accident, fall, or child abuse.
Is there treatment?
Cerbral palsy cannot be cured, but there are measures that can improve a childs life. Some children go on to live normal lives as adults. The sooner the child is introduced to helpful measures, the easier life is for them down the road. Some helpful measures include physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, drugs to control seizures, muscle spasm relaxation, surgery to correct abnormalities, or release muscle tightness, braces, and other orthotic devices, wheelchairs, walkers, and communication aids.
Cerbral palsy, although not curable can be regulated, and a close to normal life can be lived depending on the seriousness of the case. Some may need surgery, some may not. Some may need lifetime support and assistance, some may develope to not need so. All together its better to find a way for a child to learn, interact, and feel comfortable.
